Sheru EVO

Together with Walter Knoll, we have spent years researching how to design the seat shell of upholstered chairs differently. Our aim was to do without polyurethane foam: it is difficult to separate from other materials because the conventional practice is to permanently bond it to a substructure made of steel, plastic or wood, which makes homogenous recycling impossible. Initially, we tried to glue the foam punctually so that it could be readily removed at the end of its life cycle. Later, during the development of the Sheru upholstered chair series (right side), we finally succeeded in eliminating polyurethane foam altogether by integrating a 3D mesh.

This was achieved through a seat shell design with palm-shaped openings that enhances comfort, flexibility and air flow.

This new principle called “Evo” is currently used in the Sheru Evo chair series, the Yunity multipurpose chair and the Leadchair Evo.

The 3D mesh that substitutes the upholstery is sewn directly into the cover. The shell itself is made entirely from post-industrial recyclate.

The cover attaches to the shell with simple Velcro connections and can be easily removed or exchanged at any time, for example to clean the fabric.

If one desires a new or different cover, it can be done quite effortlessly without having to replace the entire chair.
