The self-initiated project for a water-saving, hygienic, and affordable tap was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It demonstrates the impact of social design by showing how improved hygiene can effectively help reduce the spread of disease.
To address this challenge, EOOS designed a tap that requires no hand contact to operate, dispenses only a predetermined amount of water, and is inexpensive to manufacture. The result is a practical, accessible solution that promotes both hygiene and water conservation.
In 2026, SafeTap received the Green GOOD DESIGN™ Award and the Austrian National Design Prize, an award presented every two years by the Federal Ministry for Economy, Energy and Tourism to honour three-dimensional design from Austria within the framework of a biennial competition. For the first time since the prize was introduced in 1962, a social design project received this recognition.
