A Romanian start-up that used our Nuki smart door lock found our name on the packaging and contacted us to design their first product. Our concept for the user interface borrows a detail from its fossil predecessor: petrol pumps are known for the rotating paddle wheel behind curved glass, which is intended to flaunt “bubble-free refueling.” We reinterpreted this paddle wheel as a digital display for different operating states. During electric charging, the display rotates faster or slower depending on the charge status, making the invisible electrical current more comprehensible.
