To make urine-diverting sanitation accessible to a wider range of users and contexts, EOOS and Laufen developed a urine diversting squat toilet. Following the Gates Foundation’s Global Access Strategy, the design has been released as an open-design solution, enabling local industries across the Global South to manufacture and adapt it.
With support from Duke University, the first field trials were carried out at a textile factory in Coimbatore, India. Waste streams were collected and analyzed on site, while the efficiency of urine separation was assessed by measuring phosphorus concentrations. The design responds to the squat toilet typology commonly used throughout Asia, eliminating the need for both a flush water tank and a foot plate.
